What to Do After Severe Weather

What to Do After Severe Weather Building Maintenance Management August 7, 2015

If you are a commercial property owner or manager, then sooner or later you are probably going to be faced with property that is damaged as a result of severe weather. No matter what time of year it happens, it can be a big hassle and possibly a big expense. We offer facilities management in Minneapolis and the surrounding areas, so we thought we would share some tips with you on what to do after a severe weather event hits your area.

As soon as possible after the weather event, and as soon as it is safe to do so, take a trip out to your commercial property. If there is no obvious damage, like fallen trees, then take a slow walk around your entire property. Keep your eyes on the ground and look for signs of damage, like roofing or siding materials that have fallen off the building and onto the ground. You should also look at any outdoor HVAC equipment that you have and make sure none of it got damaged either.

However, if you get to your commercial building and notice there are power lines down, you should get back into your vehicle and drive a safe distance away. Then you should notify the proper emergency authorities so they can come in and clean everything up safely. That way, you are not risking injury or worse.

If you do see any signs of damage, make sure you have all of your insurance paperwork in order. Call your insurance company and speak to an adjuster to start the claims and repair process. Your insurance company will tell you what steps to follow and how to make sure the repair work is done and how to get it paid for by the insurance company, if applicable. Just be sure you call your insurance company before you hire any repair companies.

If you need assistance with any repairs, you should give our facilities management company a call. We can help with HVAC equipment, repainting, fixing cracked or broken concrete or asphalt, plumbing and more. We can even help with groundskeeping and caretaking services, so if you have any trees or landscaping that need some TLC after the severe weather hits, you should give us a call. We can help with that too.
